Behind the Scenes

It can be difficult to visualize how the magic of these equine portrait sessions is completed. Here is a breakdown of the process, as well as a behind the scenes video during the photography process and the before and after images!

Equine Portrait Sessions last 15-30 minutes and only require access to a shaded doorway wide enough for your horse to stand comfortably in. A cement or solid floor is always preferred as it reflects light back unto the horse and keeps the horse’s hooves clean and visible.

During the session, we will pose the horse in artistic and complimentary ways to feature the horse’s personality, breed, and riding discipline. We use treats and a plethora of tricks to entice your horse to flex, stretch, and pose, resulting in stunning images.

The Editing Process

While your equine portrait session may only take 15–30 minutes at the barn, the true transformation happens once I begin editing. Each image is carefully refined over the course of 30–60 minutes (and sometimes longer), with meticulous attention to detail to create the polished, fine art look.

Backgrounds are replaced, and floors are cleaned up or rebuilt to keep the focus on your horse. If any mane, tail, forelock, or whiskers are lost during this process, they’re hand-painted back in for a natural finish. Your horse’s coat is enhanced to bring out shine and depth, blemishes are softened or removed, and the color is fine-tuned. Lead ropes disappear, tack is polished, and the eyes are carefully retouched to remove unwanted reflections while drawing attention to their true expression. Lighting and shadows are adjusted to complete the final, studio-style effect.

Some portraits require even more advanced editing—such as replacing a leg, tail, or closed eyes from another image, or blending multiple horses together into a seamless composition. In these cases, a single image may require 1.5–2 hours of work.

Because so much care goes into creating these pieces, I provide preparation tips ahead of time. Following these simple tips ensures your horse looks its very best straight out of the camera—allowing me to elevate the final portraits into stunning fine art you’ll be proud to display in your home for years to come.
